The Name

“Anglo Argot?” Yes, it’s spelled correctly. The freelance writing and translation service industry is overflowing with names such as Transylingua, Lingualtrans, Quatrolingo, and Ding-A-Lingua.

A Web search for a translator or writer spits out more “tongues” than a Pentecostal church revival.

To underscore my distinct philosophy, I chose a name that stands out. The Anglo is a reference to the Anglo-Saxons, who gave us the beginnings of Modern English. It includes all the peoples of the world who use English as their mother tongue.

Argot is a real word akin to “jargon” and “slang”. Its origins are a bit of a mystery, but it was most commonly used as recently as the 1970’s.

The message is that writing in English is not everyone’s forte. That also applies to native speakers. It’s like working on an automobile or fixing a leaky faucet. Sometimes it’s better for people to take their cars to a mechanic or call a plumber. So, if you need content for your website or a brochure about your newfangled gadget, call a professional, and leave the writing to them.

Learn Another Preposition, PLEASE!

     The word “around” is not the only preposition in the English language. Yet, I keep hearing it increasingly used by people who ought to know better: journalists and their interviewees. The Case for American Involvement in Ukraine

This article was intended for publication not long after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began. When Russia began amassing troops on its border with Ukraine, the U.S. did precious little to discourage Vladimir Putin from sending more and more forces to surround its neighbor on three sides.
